Naples (Napoli) is the capital of Campania and the
third-largest city in Italy, after Rome and Milan. It has a population of
nearly 1 million within it's administrative limits on a land area of 117.3
Km2 (45 sq mi). The city is situated on the country's west coast by
the Gulf on Naples, in Southern Italy. Lying between two notable volcanic
regions, Mount Vesuvius and the Campi Flegrei (en: Phlegraean Fields ).
Naples' 2,800-year-history has left it with a wealth of historical buildings
and monuments, from medieval castles to classical ruins. The most prominent
forms of architecture visible in Naples are the Medieval, Renaissance and
Baroque styles. The historic centre of Naples is listed by UNESCO as a World
Heritage Site. Naples has a total of 448 historical churches, making it one
of the most Catholic cities in the world in terms of the number of
places of worship.
